The Community Services Center is alive and very active in our Fredericksburg community. Daily services to the community of assistance with rent, electric, water and food are realized. This is no easy task, but Mildred and Cecil manage to work the monies donated to the benefit of many in need. The witnessing alone is worth all the time and effort that goes into keeping the Center operating. Many people have no idea that this is a totally volunteer, non-profit making endeavor that we provide. We take every opportunity to acquaint everyone who enters our doors with our church, where it is located and what we believe. Most importantly prayer is offered to everyone and shared with all those willing to accept it.
Not long ago a very young girl came into the Center looking for a stroller for her baby (she looked like she was no more than 15 or 16 years old). The stroller she chose would sell for around $25 and it was obvious that this was too much for her. After talking with her a bit and getting a feel for her situation, I said that $5 would be just fine. She hesitated, and said she would return the next day, would we hold it for her. I said that we would. There was another customer in the store at the time who had listened to the whole conversation. As soon as the girl left he said that he wanted to buy the stroller for the girl and give it to her. But she had already gone. I assured him that if she came back the next day and still could not pay for it, Mildred would see to it that she got it free of charge. This pleased him and he proceeded to ask many questions about our work there. I must have talked to him for 15 minutes or so, answering all kinds of questions he had regarding our work. He was impressed and thrilled to know that our church would do such things for the community at large. Once again I was reminded that we never know who is listening and that our words must be chosen carefully so as to reflect who we say we are.
This is our work as a church, one of the best outreach programs that we can do. If you feel that God has been impressing you to get involved in something, that you want to do something to contribute to the work of outreach, maybe you would consider volunteering at the Community Center. You will not be sorry, you will be greatly blessed. We are in desperate need of volunteers during operating hours; Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. You would not have to give a whole day, even a few hours for one day would be appreciated. We need people we can count on on a regular basis so that our doors can be opened daily without fail. Recently we have had to close on a few occasions because of lack of help.
Your food donations on the fourth Sabbath of the month are greatly appreciated as are the furniture and housewares donated for resale at the Center; we count on them and so do the people who come into the Center.
I pray that you will make this a matter of prayerful consideration as you think about a way of making a difference in our community all to God's glory.
